As we move deeper into spring, we’ve watched the landscape change almost overnight. The same rain that brings April blossoms has also brought restless nights. Many of us have sat through heavy storms lately—nights when the sky turns dark in the middle of the afternoon, and the wind reminds us how small we really are.
When thunder rolls, it’s normal to feel uneasy. Storms can stir up fear and questions. We may wonder why a God of order allows such chaos in the air. To begin answering that, we have to look closely at the world we live in.
A Beautiful World That Is Still Broken
In the first chapters of Genesis, we read about a creation that was “very good.” It was a world living in harmony with its Creator.
But when sin entered the story, it didn’t only fracture the human heart. It also fractured the world around us.
The Apostle Paul gives words to what we feel when storms shake our homes:
“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.”
— Romans 8:22
These heavy spring storms can remind us that creation is still “groaning.” They are not proof that God has abandoned the world. They are signs that we live in a world that is both beautiful and broken—capable of sustaining life, yet prone to upheaval.

Living in the “Already, but Not Yet”
When the winds rattle our windows, they can remind us of a deeper truth: we are living in the “already but not yet.”
God’s Kingdom has begun, but the full restoration of creation is still ahead. We see glimpses of beauty and renewal all around us, yet we also see the brokenness that remains.
If we lived in a perfect world, we wouldn’t need an anchor. But because we live in a groaning one, we must know where our stability lies.
Where Our Security Really Comes From
Storms teach us something we often forget on calm days. Our ultimate security is not found in a sturdy roof or a clear forecast.
Those are gifts, and we can be thankful for them. But they are temporary.
Our deepest peace is found in the One who was able to rest in the back of a storm-tossed boat. Jesus never promised that the groaning of the world would stop the moment we followed Him. He promised something better:
He promised to be with us in the middle of it.

A Call to Care for One Another During Storm Season
As the rain continues this season, let it prompt us to check in on each other. A broken world is hard to navigate alone.
This is one way the church can shine quietly and faithfully:
- Help a neighbor clear branches after high winds
- Send a note or make a call to someone who feels anxious when storms roll in
- Offer prayer and presence when someone feels overwhelmed
We are called to be a quiet center for one another, especially when the skies feel heavy.
A Promise We Can Hold Onto
“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.”
— Psalm 107:29
We may still hear the wind tonight. We may see more gray skies before the week is out. But we do not fear the groan of the earth, because we know the One who is making all things new.
