This July, the United States marks a historic milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026. This rare anniversary invites us to look back with gratitude, reflect on our shared history, and consider the work still ahead.
For many people, July brings parades, fireworks, family gatherings, and flags on front porches. It is a time to give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy.
As people of faith, though, our citizenship is rooted in something even more lasting than a 250-year-old republic.
Our deepest allegiance is to the Kingdom of God.

Freedom in the Kingdom of God
The United States was founded on ideals of liberty, justice, and human dignity. These ideals echo many of the values we see in the ministry of Jesus.
In the Gospels, Jesus announces good news for the poor, freedom for the captive, and hope for the oppressed.
He shows us that true freedom is not simply the right to do whatever we want. True freedom is the power to do what is good, just, and loving.
That kind of freedom changes how we live.
It shapes how we treat our neighbors. It guides how we respond to people who are hurting. And it calls us to use our lives for more than ourselves.
Jesus Gives Us a Different Measure of Success
Nations often measure success through strength, wealth, influence, or security.
Jesus gives us another measure.
He calls us to live with:
- Love
- Humility
- Mercy
- Service
- Peace
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus does not tell His followers to conquer. He calls them to comfort others, make peace, show mercy, and walk faithfully with God.
This is the pattern of life for Christians.

Using Freedom to Serve Others
The celebration may end when the fireworks fade, but our calling remains.
Each day, we have an opportunity to use our freedom in ways that reflect the grace of Christ.
We can:
- Lift up people who are vulnerable
- Welcome the stranger
- Care for neighbors in need
- Show kindness across political, cultural, and social divides
- Work for peace in our homes and communities
Freedom becomes meaningful when it is used for love.

A July Reflection on Faith and Citizenship
This historic July gives us a chance to celebrate how far our nation has come. It also gives us a reason to reflect honestly on the road ahead.
As Christians, we can love our country while remembering that our first calling is to follow Christ.
May we walk in the footsteps of the One who offers true and lasting freedom.
Blessings and peace,
Pastor Rob
